Toronto to Buffalo Movers
Keep Moving provides professional cross-border moving from Toronto and surrounding GTA communities to Buffalo and Western New York — household moves, houses, condos, apartments, residential relocations, office and business moves where appropriate, packing, furniture preparation and cross-border transportation. Although Toronto and Buffalo are relatively close geographically, moving household goods between them is an international relocation requiring border and customs preparation.
Route overview
Moving from Toronto to Buffalo
Toronto is in Ontario, Canada. Buffalo is in New York, United States. This is an international Canada–U.S. move — do not confuse it with domestic Ontario long-distance moving, even though the drive is only about 160 km.
As professional cross-border movers from Toronto to Buffalo, we plan every relocation around both sides of the border: household-goods inventory, customs documentation, personal and immigration documentation, packing, Toronto pickup access, U.S. destination access, border processing, restricted and prohibited items, scheduling, furniture preparation and delivery planning. We pick up throughout Toronto, North York, Etobicoke, Scarborough, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, Richmond Hill, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton and Niagara Region.
Customs and admissibility decisions are made by government authorities, not Keep Moving. We coordinate the transportation requirements for the moving service and can explain the documents we require for the shipment — government entry, immigration and customs requirements remain your responsibility. Learn more on our Canada–USA Cross-Border Moving page and in our Toronto–U.S. Cross-Border Moving Guide.
How far is Toronto from Buffalo?
Toronto and Buffalo are roughly 160 km apart by road, depending on the exact origin, destination and route. That relatively short distance does not make this a domestic relocation — an international border crossing is still required, and we do not guarantee driving or border-processing times. Transportation generally travels through the Niagara border region; the specific port of entry depends on commercial-vehicle requirements, operating conditions, border status, shipment circumstances, routing and customs requirements, and no specific crossing is guaranteed.

Canada to U.S. cross-border moving: what to prepare
Canada-to-U.S. household-goods moves differ from domestic moving because your goods enter another country's customs territory. Plan for U.S. border entry, possible customs inspection, a household-goods inventory, customer documentation, customs forms that may apply, restricted goods and border scheduling.
Customs documentation
Be prepared to provide accurate information about the importer/owner of the goods, the U.S. destination, the household-goods inventory, personal effects, immigration or status documentation where applicable, shipment details and other documents requested for your specific move. Depending on the circumstances of the shipment, U.S. Customs and Border Protection may require documentation such as CBP Form 3299 for unaccompanied household and personal effects. A complete inventory may be treated as the packing list and requested by CBP. Not every customer needs exactly the same documents.
CBP Form 3299
CBP Form 3299 is titled “Declaration for Free Entry of Unaccompanied Articles.” It may be relevant when household or personal effects enter the United States separately from the owner. Complete required customs documentation accurately — Keep Moving can request the documents necessary for transportation coordination, but you remain responsible for the accuracy and completeness of your information. Final acceptance and customs treatment are determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. This page is not legal or immigration advice.
Household-goods inventory
A detailed inventory matters for cross-border relocation. Include furniture, boxes, appliances, electronics, artwork, household furnishings and personal belongings — with quantities, general descriptions, room or category, and identifying information for certain items where appropriate. Never undervalue, omit or inaccurately describe goods. See our guide on preparing household goods for a Canada–U.S. move.
Used goods vs. new purchases
Certain used household effects may qualify for duty-free entry when applicable U.S. requirements are met; eligibility depends on the facts of the shipment and is determined by U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Newly purchased goods may be treated differently — identify new items, retain receipts where appropriate, provide accurate values when requested and never conceal recently purchased goods. We do not calculate duties or promise duty exemption.
Restricted & prohibited items
What movers cannot or may not move across the border
Certain items may be prohibited, restricted, permit-controlled or unsuitable under company transportation policy. Requirements depend on the item, origin, destination and applicable government rules.
- Hazardous materials, explosives, fuel, propane and certain chemicals
- Cannabis — never pack it into a Canada–U.S. household-goods shipment
- Certain food products, plants, soil and agricultural items — subject to U.S. entry restrictions or declaration requirements
- Firearms, ammunition and weapons — heavily regulated and not automatically included in household-goods transportation; disclose in advance and verify legal/import requirements independently
- Alcohol — may be subject to additional U.S. federal/state import rules, taxes or restrictions; disclose before moving day
- Certain medications — keep essential medication with you rather than in the shipment; you are responsible for applicable entry requirements
- Commercial goods not properly documented — disclose business goods accurately
- Ordinary household goods — sofas, beds, tables, chairs, dressers, boxes, kitchenware, clothing, electronics and books — remain subject to company policy, applicable law, customs requirements and inspection
Read our detailed guide: What Movers Cannot Move Across the Canada–U.S. Border. Importing a personal vehicle into the United States is a separate process from moving household furniture — a vehicle is not included in a household-goods move unless specifically arranged, and vehicle importers should review current U.S. vehicle-import requirements independently.

Packing

Full and partial packing, fragile-item packing, furniture protection, moving boxes and wardrobe boxes where offered — packing and materials may be additional services. Good packing supports a smoother border inspection.
- Label boxes clearly with contents and destination room
- Keep the inventory organized and avoid unidentified boxes
- Separate restricted or questionable items before packing
- Protect fragile items properly for the full route
- Identify recently purchased goods where applicable
- Keep customs and personal documents with you — never seal goods in a way designed to prevent customs inspection

Cost
What affects the cost of moving from Toronto to Buffalo?
Cross-border moves can involve additional planning and administrative requirements compared with domestic moves. We don't use fixed route pricing — and the short distance doesn't automatically make the move inexpensive.
- Exact Toronto/GTA pickup and Buffalo/Western New York destination
- Inventory, furniture volume and number of boxes
- Crew requirements, stairs, elevators, parking and carrying distance
- Packing, materials and furniture disassembly/reassembly
- Heavy or specialty items and additional services
- Cross-border transportation requirements and border-related scheduling
Government duties or taxes, if applicable, are separate matters determined by government authorities. Household-goods shipments may be subject to government inspection — no moving company can determine whether a shipment will be inspected or how long government processing may take.

Moving with children or family? Keep documents, medication, children's essentials, clothing, chargers, food permitted for personal travel and immediately needed items with the family rather than inside the household-goods shipment where appropriate. Whether you personally need to be at the border depends on your immigration circumstances, shipment method and customs process — confirm applicable requirements before moving day.
Know the difference
Toronto to Buffalo vs. domestic long-distance moving
A domestic Ontario move stays within Canada with no international customs border. Toronto to Buffalo enters the United States — international border processing, possible customs documentation, possible inspection and prohibited/restricted-goods rules apply.
Compare our Long-Distance Moving services within Canada with Cross-Border Moving. Both Buffalo and New York City are Canada–U.S. moves into New York State — Buffalo is in Western New York and geographically much closer to Toronto.
